Founded in 2019, Crafting the Future (CTF) is a Los Angeles-based nonprofit working to diversify the fields of art, craft, and design. They create opportunities for like-minded BIPOC artists to connect and create through scholarships, fellowships, and residencies.
What began as a Brier passion project documenting CTF co-founder and renowned glassblower Cedric Mitchell evolved into a long-term collaboration with CTF—supporting their vision for a more inclusive and representative creative community.
Brier has been honored to witness and document this transformative work over the course of a year, from Pilchuck Glass School in Washington and Penland School of Craft in North Carolina to CTF’s studio in Los Angeles.
For many participants, working with CTF is their first time working in a studio surrounded entirely by BIPOC makers—an experience that feels powerful, affirming, and at times, utopic.
Collaborations like these fuel our work—and are the kind of relationships we hope to continue nurturing for years to come.
